1st Grade-Crawler of Sonora Desert

Grade Level : First

Lesson Developer: Lubna Tanveer

Lesson Plan Title: Crawlers of Sonoran Desert

Concept / Topic To Teach:

Science creates a love of learning within students. It will help students acquire the skills of teamwork, and problem-solving which will help them in their future jobs.

Math books can be use to teach math. However, students need to know how they can apply math in other subjects as well.

Standards Addressed:

Science
Strand 4: Life Science
Life Science expands students’ biological understanding of life by focusing on the characteristics of living things, the diversity of life, and how organisms and populations change over time in terms of biological adaptation and genetics. This understanding includes the relationship of structures to their functions and life cycles, interrelationships of matter and energy in living organisms, and the interactions of living organisms with their environment.
Concept 1: Characteristics of Organisms
Understand that basic structures in plants and animals serve a function.
PO 1. Identify the following as characteristics of living things:
  • Growth and development
  • Reproduction
  • Response to stimulus
Math
Strand 2: Data Analysis, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics
Concept 3:
Systematic Listing and Counting
Understand and demonstrate the systematic listing and counting of possible outcomes.
In Grade 1, students sort objects using a Venn diagram and describe how they sorted them.
PO 1. Use Venn diagrams to sort, classify, and count objects and justify the sorting rule.

General Goal(s): Students will recognize two different types of rattlesnakes in Sonora Desert.

Specific Objectives: Students will identify similarities and difference between two types of rattlesnake

Required Materials:
  •  Computer
  • PowerPoint
  •  Internet access

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):

Teacher will tell a story about how he/she saw a rattlesnake in the backyard. Then teacher will tell ask students to do some search and get much information as they could on two rattlesnakes.

Step-By-Step Procedures:
  • Student will look at extranormal
  • They will search the Sonora desert explorer website about two different types of rattlesnake
  • They will compare both rattlesnakes to see if there are any similarities and difference between them

Plan for Independent Practice:

Students will make a two-circled Venn diagram on a computer. They will put that diagram on PowerPoint for the presentation. The power point will be only two slides first one will have students name and name of two types of rattlesnakes he/she have discussed. Second slide will have Venn diagram containing all the information. They can only use one picture of each rattle snake.

- Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):

Students will show their PowerPoint’s in class and explain what they found similar and different between two retell snakes.

- Assessment Based On Objectives:

Student will use assessment form the website of rattlesnake

Teacher will use following rubric to grade students work :

- Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities):

These students will only write down similarities and difference between rattlesnakes. they will present it on PowerPoint without Venn diagram.

- Extensions (For Gifted Students):

These students will extant the Venn diagram by comparing three rattlesnakes similarities and difference.

- Possible Connections To Other Subjects:
  • Reading
  • Geography
  • History
