RELAx Trial

RELAx: REstricted versus Liberal positive end–expiratory pressure in patients without Acute respiratory distress syndrome – a multicenter randomized controlled trial

Welcome to the website of the RELAx trial.

Project overview

RELAx is a dutch multicenter randomized controlled trial in ICU patients without ARDS with an anticipated need for invase mechanical ventilation lasting 24 hours or longer, and will compare a restricted strategy using the lowest possible PEEP starting at 5 cm H2O ('low PEEP') to a liberal strategy using a PEEP level of 8 cm H2O ('high PEEP'). RELAx anticipated to run in thirteen ICUs in the Netherlands and will recruit 980 patients.

The primary endpoint is the number of 'ventilator free days and alive at day 28', a composite endpoint of ventilator dependency and mortality.

Trial fase: finished enrollment

Started with recruiting patients in October 2017 and finished with recruiting patients in December 2019.
