Welcome to the ISSMGE TC215 website

The members of the Technical Committee "Environmental Geotechnics" - TC 215 of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) warmly welcome you to our website.

After the economic boom and the industrialization of the 1950s, the quantity of waste to be disposed of increased tremendously, and accidental spills of chemicals have created numerous contaminated sites throughout the world. Therefore, environmental problems have become more and more prevalent. To solve these problems, Environmental Geotechnics evolved in the 1980s by combining geotechnical and environmental engineering knowledge and technologies to address the issues of contaminated sites and hazardous and non-hazardous waste management and containment.

The purpose of the TC 215 is to spread the state-of-the-art and -practice of the main areas of Environmental Geotechnics to practitioners and researchers in the field of Environmental Geotechnics, as well as individuals in other professional areas (e.g., chemical engineers and environmental engineers). The TC 215 is devoted to several activities, such as:

  • Organizing and supporting the main workshops and conferences on topics concerning Environmental Geotechnics.

  • Setting up task forces meant to disseminate knowledge in Environmental Geotechnics.

  • Promoting new initiatives and increasing participation in local and global events related to the geo-environment.

  • Encouraging international and interdisciplinary cooperation.

To support these activities, a new website has been created. This website presents our Terms of Reference with the current activities to be developed, provides a detailed list of the international members of TC215, a list of related publications, a calendar of events of interest and the most important announcements for TC 215 meetings and activities.

The TC 215 also features a forum where TC members, task forces, academics and practitioners may interact, share their knowledge and discuss environmental and geotechnical problems. A page where to share documents and pictures with the TC members is also available (shared documents).
