I hiked about 10 yards to Elderberry Canyon and began skinning up the long canyon. I was able to skin up the headwall to the north ridge of Mount Tom. I dropped my skis and began the long walk to the summit. I finally returned to my skis and descended the headwall and canyon finding firm snow in the headwall and upper canyon and corn snow in the lower canyon. I measured the slope angle in the headwall to be 40 degrees.
