The tradition of singing in churches goes back into history and England has a tradition of church and cathedral choirs going back over one thousand years, you could be part of this tradition....
What do we do.......
Our main focus is to provide music for a series of special services at St John’s during the year (Remembrance, Christmas, Easter, etc.) and we get together with other choirs for Choirs Festivals at locations including Wells and Salisbury Cathedrals.
To prepare for these services we hold weekly rehearsals, these are on either Thursday or Friday from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and we expect choristers to come to at least two of these each month.
We also sing at the morning services on the first and third Sundays of each month at St John’s (9:00am rehearsal for the 9:30am service) and when needed for the whole Parish service on the fifth Sunday of the month (10:00 am rehearsal for the 10:30am service).
We will be singing music written any time between about 900AD (plainsong) to the current day....
Where does being a chorister lead......
A lifetime of shared music making, choirs are one of the few places where people from the age of about six to over eighty work as equals in a disciplined environment
The focus and concentration needed to sing in choirs is a benefit in all areas of life. The following well known people are all ex-choristers – Alastair Cook (Cricketer), Harry Christophers (Conductor), Jon Snow (Newscaster), Brian Kay & Aled Jones (BBC Presenters)
There is some evidence that apart from being a natural and pleasurable activity singing has health benefits, releasing endorphins into the blood stream and aiding with breathing problems.
For able young choristers (school years 3-4) there are scholarships to sing in Cathedral choirs (Wells and Salisbury are probably the nearest)
For able student age choristers many Universities and Colleges and some Cathedrals offer Choral (and/or Organ) scholarships
The choir of St John’s Church, Hinton Charterhouse is looking for new members. If you enjoy singing you could be one.....
